The *only* way to be your very very best is to pay attention to your very best. (Alix Martin)

N.L.P

(Neuro Linguistic Programming)

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is concerned with how top people in different fields obtain outstanding results, and how their successful thinking patterns and behaviour can be copied. It is concerned with what happens when we think, and the effect of our thinking on our behaviour, and the behaviour of others. It shows us how we can think more usefully and thus achieve more. NLP teaches us how to communicate, inwardly and outwardly, in a way that can make a difference between mediocrity & excellence, between just existing & really living.

NLP is both an art and a science of personal excellence. It is an art, because the way that we think and act is unique to each of us, and any description - especially of feelings, attitudes and beliefs - is bound to be highly subjective. It is also a science because it incorporates well researched methods that can be used to identify the patterns of successful behaviour.

History of NLP
NLP was developed in the mid-seventies by Richard Bandler, then a mathematician, computer expert & psychotherapist, and John Grinder, a professor of linguistics, out of their work as 'behavioural modellers'. In this collaborative project, they were concerned with 'how' things worked rather than with theoretical descriptions of them. Initially they modelled the most effective therapists, people like Carl Rogers (Person Centred Counselling), Fritz Perls (Gestalt Therapy) & Virginia Satir (Family Therapy) to discovered similar 'effective patterns' underlying their individual styles of behaviour. They systematised these 'patterns' and made them available to other practitioners. From the range of skills they integrated and synthesised to develop this work, they created what came to be known as NLP.

What use is NLP? Richard Bandler described N.L.P. as........... "an attitude & a methodology that leaves behind a trail of effective techniques"

The ATTITUDE is curiosity, experimentation & flexibility

The METHODOLOGY is modelling. The systematic reproduction of 'what works' . For instance practical applications of this would be - how can behaviour be structured and sequenced to allow any individual to learn easily & how can thinking patterns be changed to produce outstanding results. Coupled with this the methodology includes constant evaluation of the results - testing at each stage to confirm that you are getting what you want.

The TRAIL OF TECHNIQUES are the product of modelling effective behaviours. When successful behaviour is modelled and 'what works' becomes explicit it is a simple matter to provide other people with a tool box of effective interventions & techniques that will make a remarkable difference to their lives.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

The practitioners of NLP have now modelled excellence in many areas of human behaviour - education, therapy, business, sport, social work, health and personal development. Because the methodology is only concerned with 'what works' NLP is influencing & making a difference to the development of all areas of human achievement.

Does NLP work? Of course it does, it is the study of 'what works'!

And NLP and coaching?

NLP enables the coach to have a large tool kit of skills and techniques that they can use to move a client on easily, in exactly the way that suits the client. An NLP Coach is curious, non-judgmental, able to move clients through 'stuck states' and achieve outcomes for the client that the client had previously thought were only dreams. With NLP there is little value in getting involved in lengthy content (the ins and outs of a client's life), nor with problems in their past. Value is found in find out 'how' the client already achieves success in their life and in using the clients own success strategies in more areas/applications of their life. Doing this with a client is fun for both the coach and client and often hugely enlightening for the client.

NLP Motto: You are already good enough and yes, you could do better. You are, right at this moment and in every moment that you have lived, doing the best that you can, given your resources and understanding at the time. Modelling your own and others excellence, leads to the achievement of more excellence!!

NLP Presuppositions

We are all unique and experience the world in different ways

People respond to their map of reality, not to reality

Mind and body form a linked system

If what you are doing isn't working, do something else

Choice is better than no choice

We are always communicating

The meaning of your communication is the response you get

There is no failure, only feedback

Behind every behaviour is a positive intention

Anything can be accomplished if the task is broken down into small enough steps
